5-Star Reader Comment

This is exactly what I needed. I made the Melt In Your Mouth Chicken on a Friday night and my husband said it was the best meal he’d had at home in years. The whole menu came together so easily and the table looked beautiful with just a few candles. Thank you, Donya!

Donya’s Tips for a Cozy Date Night at Home

Set the table before you start cooking. Five minutes of intention — two plates, cloth napkins, a candle — transforms the whole evening before a single dish hits the stove. It signals to both of you that tonight is different. Tonight is on purpose.

Make the dessert the night before. The Creamy Chocolate Dip takes minutes to put together and chills beautifully overnight. One less thing to think about Friday evening and one more reason to feel completely calm when your person walks in the door.

Melt In Your Mouth Chicken is the anchor — let it shine. The sauce is rich, creamy, and deeply flavored. Keep the sides simple so nothing competes. Mashed potatoes and a light salad are the perfect supporting cast.

Halve the recipes. Most recipes on the blog serve four to six. For a dinner for two, cut the ingredients in half and you are perfectly set. The chicken and the cornbread both scale down beautifully.

Give yourself an hour. This entire menu can be on the table in under an hour of active cooking — less if the dessert is already chilled. Start with the cornbread, then the potatoes, then the chicken. The salad comes together last, right before you sit down.

The Make-Ahead Plan

The secret to a calm, romantic evening is doing as much as possible before the night actually starts.

  • The night before. Make the chocolate dip, and salad dressing then refrigerate. They are done and waiting.
  • One hour before dinner. Bake the cornbread. While it bakes, prep the salad ingredients and refrigerate. Boil the potatoes.
  • 30 minutes before. Sear and finish the chicken. Mash the potatoes. Dress the salad right before sitting down.
  • At the table. Slice the cornbread, pour the wine, and sit down with your person. The kitchen is handled.

Things I Love for a Date Night Table

Setting a beautiful table does not have to be complicated. These are the pieces I reach for every time.

Printed Cotton Tablecloth

A little pattern goes a long way. It instantly makes a simple table feel intentional and dressed up without any extra effort.

My Favorite Wine Glasses

The right glass makes everything taste better — and feel more special. Pull out the ones you actually love, not the everyday ones.

Cloth Napkins

Such a small thing that makes such a big impression. Fold them simply, place them on the plate, and the whole table feels elevated.

Wooden Salad Bowl

Warm, natural, and beautiful on any table. The Strawberry Spinach Salad looks stunning served right from a big wooden bowl.

Pretty Small Bowls

A small bowl of nuts to snack on while dinner finishes. A beautiful dish for the bread. The little details that make the table feel gathered and generous.

Vintage plates and flower vases. This is my favorite part. Over the years I have collected the most beautiful vintage plates and little vases that I bring out for special evenings. Each one has a story. Each one makes the table feel personal in a way that nothing you can buy new ever quite does. Use what you have collected and loved — that is what makes a table truly yours.
