Donya’s Tips for the Best Spinach Artichoke Dip

Cut the artichokes smaller. I like to roughly chop the artichoke hearts before adding them. It keeps every bite balanced instead of getting one giant chunk.

Shred your own cheese. Y’all, this is a game changer. Pre-shredded cheese has a coating that keeps it from melting as smoothly, so please take the time to shred the cheese yourself. You’ll be glad you did.

Add heat if you love spice. I like to add a pinch of red pepper flakes or a dash of hot sauce. It adds just enough kick without taking away from the overall taste.

Love fresh spinach? Try my spinach salad with warm bacon dressing or classic creamed spinach next.

Ingredients You’ll Need (and Why They Work)

  • Fresh Spinach – It adds freshness to balance all the cheesy richness. If you’re short on time, frozen spinach works too (just thaw and drain well).
  • Artichoke Hearts – Tender artichokes bring a little tang and texture that makes this dip unique. Canned or jarred works perfectly.
  • Cream Cheese – The creamy base that holds everything together.
  • Sour Cream – Adds a tangy flavor and lightens the texture so the dip isn’t too heavy.
  • Mozzarella Cheese – Melts into gooey strands that make this dip extra cheesy.
  • Parmesan Cheese – Sharp and salty, it gives depth and that irresistible “nutty” flavor.
  • Garlic – Just makes the flavors pop and gives the dip a “little something extra.”
  • Salt & Pepper – Simple seasonings that brings out the best of the other ingredients.

Can Frozen Spinach Be Used?

Using fresh is best, but you can substitute frozen if needed. Thaw the spinach, drain it really well, and squeeze out as much liquid as possible, then add the rest of the ingredients to the crock pot.

How To Make Creamy Spinach Dip

This dish comes together in easy two steps in what I lovingly call a “dump and go recipe!” Add all ingredients to a small crock pot and stir. Cook on LOW for 2 hours, stirring halfway through. Taste and adjust seasoning before serving. That’s it!

(Full measurements and step-by-step instructions are in the recipe card below!)

Can Crock Pot Spinach Artichoke Dip Be Made Ahead Of Time?

Absolutely! Just make it per the instructions, let it cool, and then store it, covered, in the fridge. When you want to serve it, add it back to the slow cooker, heat it thoroughly, stir, find your favorite chips, and enjoy!

What To Serve With Slow Cooker Spinach Artichhoke Dip

Warm spinach dip is always the MVP of my game day get-togethers served with Crock Pot Hawaiian Meatballs, Ranch Fire Crackers and Salami Cream Cheese Roll Ups. And, at holiday parties, I love serving it with Southern Pickled Shrimp and Cream Cheese Sausage Balls.

FAQ For This Recipe

Can I swap sour cream for Greek yogurt?

You sure can. Greek yogurt makes this dip lighter but it keeps the creamy texture and it adds a slight tang and extra protein.

Can I bake this in the oven instead of using a crock pot?

Yes. I like the convenience of “hands off” cooking but you can mix everything together, spread into a baking dish, and bake at 350°F for about 25–30 minutes until hot and bubbly.

How long can I keep this dip warm in the slow cooker?

It can stay on the “warm” setting for 2–3 hours, which makes it perfect for parties. Just give it a stir now and then to keep it smooth.

This looks delicious I am so intrigued by the idea of using fresh spinach!
What size crockpot do you use? And what brand of you don’t mind my asking I have a 4 qt but it looks like it would be too big for this

    Thanks so much! Elizabeth

    1. Thank you! I’m so glad you’re excited to try the recipe — fresh spinach really does make a difference!
This dish works best in a 2 to 3 quart slow cooker. A 4-quart can still work fine, but the dip may spread out thinner and cook a bit faster — just keep an eye on it so it doesn’t dry out around the edges.
You can use any reliable slow cooker, but if you’re curious, I typically use:
      • Crock-Pot brand (the classic manual dial or the programmable model)
      • Hamilton Beach also makes a great 3-quart option that’s affordable and heats evenly
If your 4-quart slow cooker runs a bit hot or you’re worried about overcooking, you can:
      • Check it at the 1.5 to 2 hour mark instead of going the full time
      • Line it with a slow cooker liner for easier cleanup
Let me know how it turns out if you give it a try!

  2. Can the fresh spinach be substituted for bagged frozen? I got all the ingredients to make this and was so bummed when I saw fresh.

    1. Sure can! Frozen spinach works beautifully in this dip—especially for holiday prep or potlucks when time is short. The cheese, garlic, and artichokes still shine, and no one will know the shortcut! ~Donya

    1. That’s wonderful to hear! I’m so glad the recipe was a hit at your office party — sounds like it earned its spot as your new go-to. Thanks for sharing your success, and happy pot-lucking! 😊

Hands-down one of the very best spinach and artichoke recipes EVER. I usually double this batch for a party. I also double the amount of garlic cloves and add some onion powder and garlic powder and about 10 dashes of hot sauce. This is a hit every single time and thank you for sharing!

    1. That sounds like a winning combination! Thanks so much for your kind words — I’m so glad this recipe has become a go-to for your gatherings. Doubling the batch and adding your own spin with extra garlic, onion powder, and a splash of hot sauce sounds absolutely delicious. So happy it’s always a hit at your parties!

    1. Thank you so much! I’m thrilled you loved the greens—and I really appreciate you sharing how you made the recipe work in your Instant Pot. Great idea for saving stovetop space, and it sounds like it turned out absolutely delicious. So glad it’s another winner for you!

    1. So glad you enjoyed it — a little “mmmm” is the best kind of review! Thanks for taking the time to leave a note.

    1. Great question! A 1.25 qt crock pot is definitely on the smaller side, so whether the recipe will fit depends on the volume of ingredients. Most of my slow cooker recipes are written for a 4–6 qt crock pot, so if you’re working with 1.25 qt, you’ll likely need to cut the recipe down to about one-fourth to avoid overflow and ensure it cooks evenly. ~Donya

Perfect! There are only two of us so I generally 1/2 recipes. I did add jalapeños because…yum! Thanks for sharing!

    1. That sounds perfect! Halving the recipe is such a smart move for two, and I love the jalapeño addition — because yes, yum!! So glad you enjoyed it, and thank you for sharing your twist.

Made as per recipe directions. Added maybe 1/2tsp or less salt and 1/4 tsp white pepper. Served with tortilla chips. Excellent! Thanks for sharing the recipe.

    1. I’m honored, Denise! I would triple the recipe. It’s super easy, just use 2 crock pots. Congratulations to the happy couple!
