If you are craving something warm, gooey, and irresistibly savory, then let me introduce you to one of my go-to comfort foods: stromboli! Stromboli is a delicious bundle of cheesy, meaty goodness baked into a crisp crust—and let me tell you, it’s my family’s dream meal, and my son has been known to eat a whole one all by himself. Sure, you can grab one from the store, but making it at home is so much better (and way more affordable). Plus, with just seven simple ingredients, this recipe couldn’t be easier!
Make It Your Own: Easy Recipe Variations
This stromboli recipe is already incredible as-is, but if you want to mix it up, here are a few ideas:
- Cheese Options: Substitute mozzarella and Parmesan with provolone, Asiago, or a sharp cheddar for a twist.
- Extra Fillings: Add vegetables like sautéed mushrooms, bell peppers, or onions for additional flavor and texture.
- Spicy Kick: Add a sprinkle of crushed red pepper flakes or chopped jalapeños to the filling if you like extra heat.
- Different Meats: Swap the Italian sausage or pepperoni with other favorites like cooked ground beef, ham, or bacon.
Sausage and Pepperoni Stromboli Ingredients
- Pizza Dough: Either homemade or store-bought dough works beautifully.
- Italian Sausage: Cooked, crumbled, and seasoned for hearty flavor.
- Cheese: For that stretchy, gooey goodness, we need shredded mozzarella, and for a bit of depth and saltiness, we need parmesan!
- Pepperoni Slices: Adds extra spice and flavor with a bit of crunch when baked.
- Pizza Sauce: Adds a savory, tomato-rich layer to each bite. This is typically thicker than marinara sauce so it won’t run out when baked.
- Egg Wash: This is made by mixing an egg with a little water to give the crust a golden color and slightly crispy texture.
Step-By-Step Directions
- Build – Cook the sausage, roll out your dough, and layer it up! Start with a thin pizza sauce spread, then add sausage, mozzarella, pepperoni, and a sprinkle of Parmesan.
- Roll – Fold in the short sides to seal, then roll it up tightly, starting from a long edge. Use the parchment paper to help you roll it neatly. Place seam-side down on your baking sheet.
- Egg Wash and Cheese – Brush the top with egg wash (just a beaten egg and water), then sprinkle on the rest of the Parmesan.
- Bake – Pop it in the oven at 350°F for 18 minutes or until golden. Let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing. If the dough needs more time, just bake a few extra minutes.
How Long Does Baked Stromboli Stay Good For?
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat slices in the oven at 350°F until warmed through to maintain the crispy crust and melty interior.

Absolutely! Prepare the stromboli, wrap it tightly, and store it in the fridge for up to 12 hours before baking. Brush with egg wash just before baking.
The best method is to warm in the oven or air fryer to keep the crust crispy. Microwave reheating works, too, though the crust may be softer.

Ingredients
- 1 ball or roll of pizza dough (homemade is great but I used store-bought)
- 1 lb Italian sausage
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 package sliced pepperoni
- 2 cups pizza sauce
- 1 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
- 1 egg
Instructions
- Cook Italian sausage in a medium skillet until browned. Drain on paper towels and crumble into small pieces.
- Heat oven to 450 degrees. Place parchment paper on a baking pan and lightly flour. Roll the dough out to form a large rectangle.
- Brush a thin layer of pizza sauce on dough. Layer on crumbled sausage then mozzarella cheese. Place pepperoni slices on top of cheese then sprinkle with ¾ cup Parmesan cheese. Gently roll in short sides of dough to form a seal around filling.
- Starting on long side of dough, carefully roll into one third of Stromboli. Using parchment, roll dough again until reaching opposite end. Pinch together and place seam side down.
- Mix egg with 1 tablespoon of water. Brush egg mixture over Stromboli and sprinkle with remaining ¼ Parmesan cheese.
- Place in oven and IMMEDIATELY TURN OVEN DOWN to 350 degrees. Bake for approximately 18 minutes. Remove from oven and let rest for 10 minutes. Test center of turnover. If dough is not completely cooked, slice Stromboli in half and bake for additional 5-8 minutes.
- Serve with warm marinara sauce
