Those of you who read A Southern Soul know that when I post a recipe, most of the time, I share a little story. You always seem to like that about me, and that makes me really happy.
Today, there’s not really a story. I don’t have one because this recipe is just straight up, no kidding, fantastic. Apples, brown sugar, a few spices all wrapped in puffed pastry. Yep, that’s pretty much it.
This Apple Strudel is a stand alone recipe, it honestly doesn’t need much advertising or selling, it’s just no-joke stinking delicious! With a crispy, flakey pastry exterior and sweet, warm filling, this recipe is packed with incredible flavors the whole family will love.
Ingredients Needed To Make Apple Strudel
- Apples
- Granulated sugar
- Brown sugar
- Cinnamon
- Unseasoned breadcrumbs
- Egg
- Flour
- Salt
- Puffed pastry
How To Make Apple Strudel
I used granny smith and honey crisp apples to give a good balance to the filling. I did have fun peeling the apples using my handy, dandy apple contraption. It made easy, neat work of this sometimes frustrating job.
Next, came making the sugar blend. Once you mix all the ingredients together, it’s best to let it sit for about 15 minutes so that the sugar sort of melts onto the apples. Then, you just roll out the puffed pastry, fill it up, roll it up in a bundle, and bake.

No Donya I didn’t make it yet, one question, you call for 2 T of Bread crumbs, 2T of white and 3 T of brown sugar, this sure doesn’t seem like nearly enough to cover the bottom of two puff pastries, to me. On other think, all our apple pies and these types of recipes we always use Spies . Can’t wait to try this recipe.

Hi, can’t wait to try this, but you have a typo in your recipe. In the ingredients list the second apple should say “honey crisp apple”.

Do you bring both edges over the apple mixture? Can’t wait to make this! Perfect for a fall dessert ❤️

Hey there Susan!
I am thrilled to hear that you’re giving this recipe a try, you’re totally right, this Apple Strudel is a perfect Fall dessert! After you’ve layered the the sugar and apple mixture onto the dough, you’ll want to fold over one of the long edges onto the opposite long edge, sandwiching the apples in the center. Then gently pinch all of the edges to create a full seal. In this post, there is an image illustrating the technique I described that you may find helpful. I really hope you enjoy this recipe, let me know how everything turns out!

Is panko ok to use in place of the breadcrumbs? I LOVE all your recipes, thank you so much for sharing them with everyone.

Hey there Becky!
Thank you so much for your interest in this recipe and for your kind words, I really appreciate your spreading the word. You can definitely use Panko breadcrumbs, but I would make sure they aren’t seasoned with anything else, or it would really change the flavor of the dish. You can also make homemade bread crumbs out of older bread which is super easy, whatever works best for you! Thank you for your support, let me know how it turns out!
