Donya’s Tips for the Best Spinach Artichoke Dip

Cut the artichokes smaller. I like to roughly chop the artichoke hearts before adding them. It keeps every bite balanced instead of getting one giant chunk.

Shred your own cheese. Y’all, this is a game changer. Pre-shredded cheese has a coating that keeps it from melting as smoothly, so please take the time to shred the cheese yourself. You’ll be glad you did.

Add heat if you love spice. I like to add a pinch of red pepper flakes or a dash of hot sauce. It adds just enough kick without taking away from the overall taste.

Love fresh spinach? Try my spinach salad with warm bacon dressing or classic creamed spinach next.

Ingredients You’ll Need (and Why They Work)

  • Fresh Spinach – It adds freshness to balance all the cheesy richness. If you’re short on time, frozen spinach works too (just thaw and drain well).
  • Artichoke Hearts – Tender artichokes bring a little tang and texture that makes this dip unique. Canned or jarred works perfectly.
  • Cream Cheese – The creamy base that holds everything together.
  • Sour Cream – Adds a tangy flavor and lightens the texture so the dip isn’t too heavy.
  • Mozzarella Cheese – Melts into gooey strands that make this dip extra cheesy.
  • Parmesan Cheese – Sharp and salty, it gives depth and that irresistible “nutty” flavor.
  • Garlic – Just makes the flavors pop and gives the dip a “little something extra.”
  • Salt & Pepper – Simple seasonings that brings out the best of the other ingredients.

Can Frozen Spinach Be Used?

Using fresh is best, but you can substitute frozen if needed. Thaw the spinach, drain it really well, and squeeze out as much liquid as possible, then add the rest of the ingredients to the crock pot.

How To Make Creamy Spinach Dip

This dish comes together in easy two steps in what I lovingly call a “dump and go recipe!” Add all ingredients to a small crock pot and stir. Cook on LOW for 2 hours, stirring halfway through. Taste and adjust seasoning before serving. That’s it!

(Full measurements and step-by-step instructions are in the recipe card below!)

Can Crock Pot Spinach Artichoke Dip Be Made Ahead Of Time?

Absolutely! Just make it per the instructions, let it cool, and then store it, covered, in the fridge. When you want to serve it, add it back to the slow cooker, heat it thoroughly, stir, find your favorite chips, and enjoy!

What To Serve With Slow Cooker Spinach Artichhoke Dip

Warm spinach dip is always the MVP of my game day get-togethers served with Crock Pot Hawaiian Meatballs, Ranch Fire Crackers and Salami Cream Cheese Roll Ups. And, at holiday parties, I love serving it with Southern Pickled Shrimp and Cream Cheese Sausage Balls.

FAQ For This Recipe

Can I swap sour cream for Greek yogurt?

You sure can. Greek yogurt makes this dip lighter but it keeps the creamy texture and it adds a slight tang and extra protein.

Can I bake this in the oven instead of using a crock pot?

Yes. I like the convenience of “hands off” cooking but you can mix everything together, spread into a baking dish, and bake at 350°F for about 25–30 minutes until hot and bubbly.

How long can I keep this dip warm in the slow cooker?

It can stay on the “warm” setting for 2–3 hours, which makes it perfect for parties. Just give it a stir now and then to keep it smooth.

    1. Hey there Holly!
That’s a great question! I would recommend using your 2 qt Crock Pot for this Spinach Artichoke Dip since you have one. Honestly, you can use any size crock pot, but smaller tends to work a little better. Thank you so much for your interest in this recipe, I hope you enjoy! Happy Holidays!

    1. Hey there Lennae!
That is a fantastic questions, and the answer is yes! Before you add your artichoke hearts into the Crock Pot you’ll want to drain all of the liquid away. I hope this helps, thank you so much for your interest in this recipe. If you have any other questions don’t hesitate to ask! Happy Holidays!

Oops I was not sure about draining the artichokes either so I only drained half just in case that should be included in the recipe. And I don’t see how ten oz if fresh spinach would do tuna. Small crockpot initially, though I suppose it can smash good!. I’m glad I used my regular one as I haven’t even added the second bag of spinach yet and it already seems like a lot! Tastes great though!

      2. Hey there Stacy!

  1. Can this be cooked on the stove top? I do have a 6 quart crock pot but I’m worried it’s too big. What’s your thoughts?

    1. Hey there Michelle!
That’s a great question! If you have a Crock Pot, I would go ahead and use it for this recipe. My concern would be if the Crock Pot was too small, but if you have a 6 quart, it won’t really matter if it’s too big. I hope this helps, let me know how you like the recipe if you end up trying it!

    1. Hey there Kara!
That’s a great question, you can absolutely freeze it. Make sure that when you freeze it, you put it in an airtight container, and then reheat it in the crockpot on warm or in the oven on a low temp. I hope this helps, I’m so happy to hear you enjoyed this recipe! Thank you for your support!

      1. Hey there Samantha!
Thank you so much for your interest in this recipe, that’s a great question! The concern using frozen spinach would be the additional moisture from defrosting it. I would say that using fresh spinach is best but you can substitute frozen if needed. You’ll want to thaw the spinach, drain it and squeeze out as much liquid as possible then add with the rest of the ingredients to the crock pot. If you have any other questions feel free to reach out, thank you for your support, I hope you enjoy the recipe!
