As soon as fall rolls in, I can’t help but crave cozy comfort foods that warm the soul, like hearty Southern chicken stew, chili, or a big bowl of chicken soup. Lately, this Chicken and Cheese Tortellini Soup has climbed to the top of my favorites list. It’s the perfect blend of creamy, cheesy goodness and wholesome ingredients, making it an ideal go-to when the weather cools down—or when those inevitable winter sniffles strike!
Why You’ll Love This 30-Minute Comfort Food Recipe
- Budget-Friendly—This recipe uses common ingredients like celery, carrots, and onion, making it easy on the wallet while still being big on flavor.
- Easy to Make – Everything is made in just one big pot. I love using a large dutch oven.
- Hearty – Made with cheese-filled tortellini, chicken, and white beans, this soup will keep you full for hours.
Can This Soup Be Made Ahead Of Time?
Sure, with one small change. Follow the instructions up to where the cheese tortellini is added. Bring the soup up to a simmer, then add the pasta and cook for 5 minutes. Finish with lemon juice and adjust the seasoning. You’re done!
Chicken & Cheese Tortellini Soup Ingredients
- The base of this soup is three staple French ingredients: celery, carrots, and onion, all sauteed in olive oil.
- For seasoning, it’s garlic, dried thyme, oregano, and basil. Minced garlic has the most flavor!
- Chicken breast gets cooked in the same pot as everything else for ease and to help flavor everything else.
- Vegetables and chicken broth or stock will both work just fine.
- White beans, like butter beans or cannellini beans, will work.
- Cheese tortellini adds a delicious and creamy bite.
- Lemon juice adds just the right amount of acidity to brighten the soup.
Recipe Variations For Healthy Chicken Soup
- Chicken Alternatives: Feel free to toss in rotisserie chicken to speed up the soup and make it ultra-easy.
- Spice Options: If you don’t have the seasonings listed, you can use poultry seasoning.
- Bone Broth: Try using chicken bone broth for a bit of added protein.
Step By Step Directions
- Flavor Base: To start off the soup, saute the celery, carrots, and onions in the olive oil. Then, add the garlic, salt, pepper, and dried herbs.
- Turn It Into Soup: Add stock, shredded chicken, and white beans. Stir to incorporate all ingredients. Turn the burner down to low and simmer for 15 minutes.
- Add the Tortellini: Boil for an additional 5 minutes until the cheese pasta is heated throughout and tender. Stir in lemon juice. Taste and adjust seasoning. Serve hot with a sprinkle of parmesan and a basket of garlic rolls.
Frequently Asked Questions
Any leftovers can be kept in an airtight container for up to 3 days. The pasta does start to get soft after day 2.
You can, but I would freeze it without the pasta. Add the pasta when you reheat it since it only takes a short bit to cook.
Sure! Cook it on LOW for 6-8 hours or HIGH for 3-4 hours. Then, test to make sure the chicken is cooked. Add the tortellini in when there’s 30 minutes to go.
Serving Suggestions
When I serve cheese tortillini soup, I like to serve it with Stuffed Baked Potatoes or Biscuit Dough Garlic Knots for dipping. If you’re looking for something fresh, try the soup with Spinach Salad with Warm Bacon Dressing or a Simple Green Bean Salad.

Today, I found a half package of tortellini in the freezer and was wondering how to make a meal for two from this little bit, so they don’t go to waste. Half an hour later, I spy this recipe! Some lonely tortellini out of the freezer and a nourishing, tasty meal for supper. What’s not too like!

Soup is not just a winter thing in my house, we all just love home made soup. This soup is very flavorful, has not too many ingredients, and done and ready to eat quickly!! I used half a 15 whatever oz can of beans, but I think using the whole can will work, without overloading the soup with beans. The chicken will influence the flavor of the soup, and I found precooked and shredded chicken that was seasoned with just salt, pepper, onion and something… not a “mexican” taste or “italian” taste, and it was perfect. So if I was making my own shredded chicken, I would keep the seasoning simple. I wasn’t planning on soup for supper yesterday, but plans changed at the last minute and this soup saved dinner! hah! Thanks for another great recipe!
