My son wanted to make something for his girlfriend’s family for Christmas. This was perfect. He mastered it easily and they all enjoyed snacking on them over the holidays. We even had all the ingredients around the house so there were no lat minute store runs. It’s a perfect snack and gift.

Donya’s Tips and Things To Know

Toss gently and consistently. The key is even coating. Set a timer and toss the crackers every five to eight minutes for a full 20 minutes. Every cracker should be completely coated before you are done.

Do not skip the resting time. After tossing, let the crackers sit for at least a few hours — overnight is even better. The oil soaks all the way into the cracker and the flavor deepens significantly. The next-day crackers are always better than the same-day crackers.

Adjust the heat to your crowd. One tablespoon of red pepper flakes gives you a mild, background warmth. Two tablespoons and things get serious. Know your audience — and your own heat tolerance — before you mix.

A large zip-top bag is the easiest method. Add the oil and seasonings to the bag first, shake to combine, then add the crackers and gently turn. Less mess, easier tossing, and the bag doubles as your storage container.

Ingredients for Ranch Fire Crackers: Spicy No Bake Recipe

Ingredients For This No-Bake Recipe

  • Saltine Crackers – You can change the crackers and make spicy ranch oyster Crackers.
  • Canola or Vegetable Oil – Another mild vegetable oil will work, but canola is the lightest and mildest option. You can also use olive or avocado oil is you want.
  • Ranch Dressing Mix Seasoning – I like Hidden Valley Ranch.
  • Red Pepper Flakes – for extra spice. Feel free to leave them out if you don’t like the heat.

Make Them Your Own: Easy Variations

Make them sweet and spicy. Add a teaspoon of brown sugar to the oil mixture for a subtle sweetness that plays beautifully against the heat and ranch flavors

Add garlic and onion powder. A half teaspoon of each added to the oil gives the crackers a deeper, more savory flavor that makes them taste a little more complex.

Try a different seasoning packet. Lemon pepper, taco seasoning, za’atar, or dill all work beautifully with the same method. Each one gives you a completely different snack from the same four-step process.

Swap the crackers. Oyster crackers, mini saltines, cheese crackers, or Goldfish all work perfectly. Oyster crackers give you a rounder, bite-sized version that is great for party bowls.

Use butter instead of oil. Melt a stick of butter and use it in place of the canola oil for a richer, more indulgent cracker. The flavor is noticeably different — buttery and bold.

Step-By-Step Directions

  1. Place crackers in a large bowl. Mix together ranch seasoning, red pepper, and canola oil.
  2. Drizzle the mixture over crackers and, using a large spoon, gently toss to coat. Mix crackers about every 5- 8 minutes for a total time of 20 minutes.

Make a Big Batch and Keep Them on Hand

These are one of my favorite things to have ready in the kitchen at all times.

Great for road trips and snack bins. Portion into small zip bags and toss in the car, the lunchbox, or the snack drawer. They travel perfectly and hold their crunch for days.

Make ahead by 24 hours. The flavor is noticeably better the next day after the oil has fully soaked in. Mix them the night before and they are at their absolute best by party time.

Store in an airtight container. A zip-top bag or sealed container keeps them crispy and flavorful for up to one week at room temperature.

Double or triple the batch. The recipe scales up perfectly. Use a large stockpot for tossing when making multiple batches.

Perfect for gifting. Pack them in a mason jar or a cellophane bag tied with a ribbon. They make a thoughtful, homemade gift that people genuinely love to receive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I really need 1½ cups of oil?

Yes — and the crackers will not be greasy. The saltines absorb the oil completely as they rest. What sounds like a lot going in becomes perfectly seasoned, crispy crackers coming out. Trust the process.

How spicy are these?

With one tablespoon of red pepper flakes, they have a mild, slow-building warmth — noticeable but not overwhelming. Two tablespoons brings real heat. Start with one and taste before adding more.

Can I make these gluten-free?

Yes — just swap in your favorite gluten-free crackers and make sure your ranch mix is gluten-free too.

Can I make these ahead of time?

Yes! These are actually better the next day once the flavors settle in.

Ways To Serve Spicy Ranch Crackers

I love to munch on these crackers plain, but they are stellar with my Homemade Pimento Cheese and Dill Pickle Herb Dip. Or for a lighter option, serve them with Black Bean and Corn Salsa. And for lunch (a great option for leftovers), I love dipping them into Crock Pot Potato Soup or Bloody Mary Chili.

I don’t like them real spicy. I heat the oil with the pepper flakes and let it steep for a few minutes. I then strain the flakes out. Perfect amount of heat for me.

    Hello folks,
I’ve been making these crackers for about 25 years. I’ve noticed changes over the years. I always use 2 packages of the Ranch seasoning mix. This past weekend I followed this recipe while visiting friends. The minute I tried them, I knew something was different. Please give it a try using 2 packages of Ranch seasoning mix.. I believe you might enjoy it even more.
I’ve also seen the recipes having you put them in the oven. It’s totally not necessary.

    1. Hey there Jamie!
Thank you so much for your interest in this recipe! If you give this recipe another try, I would recommend sticking to the original ingredients and see how that turns out, I’ve never had a problem with oiliness so my guess would be that using canola oil instead of veggie oil will be your best bet. I hope this helps, let me know how everything turns out if you give the recipe another try!

Yes you absolutely can club crackers! I will tell you, they’re a little more crumbly so some may break, but you can totally give it a try. Let me know how you like this recipe, I hope you have a Happy New Year!
      ~Donya

    1. Hey there Joni!
That’s a good question! I’ve never tried to use veggie broth instead of oil, but I think that the veggie broth would end up making the crackers soggy if I had to guess. If you wanted to try a healthier option instead of canola oil, you could try using avocado oil or coconut oil. I hope this helps, let me know if you end up trying it, I hope you enjoy!
      Best,
      ~Donya

    2. I have been making these for years and they are so good! If you want to try using veggie broth, I would experiment by baking them immediately after pouring the mixture on them. Have the oven already preheated, probably 400*. It’s certainly worth a try. This is a very inexpensive recipe. You won’t be out much if it doesn’t work.

      1. Hey there Dawn!
Thank you so much for sharing! That sounds like a great idea, definitely worth giving it a try. These crackers make the BEST snack, thank you for your support. I hope you have a great day!
        ~Donya

      2. A co-worker brought these a potluck at work and now…we’ve asked her to bring them to every potluck going forward! So delicious and addicting!

Question-can u substitute the oil for butter? I’ve seen a Ritz cracker recipe that used butter instead of oil, but they had to bake them? I’m going to try my hand at these today, but won’t want to change the recipe if it’s going to alter the original…because it’s so good!

      3. Hey there Dawn!
Wow! Thank you so much for your kind words, I am so happy to hear that everyone at your work enjoyed these tasty cracker, they’re definitely a great potluck dish! I’ve tried this recipe with butter before and it does work, but personally I prefer the original more. I would recommend that you try making a batch with oil and another batch with melted butter and see which one you like more, after all, cooking is all about personal preferences. Thank you so much for your kind words of support, please let me know how everything turns out, I hope you enjoy!
