Lasagna is one of those recipes most people think fondly of. Whether it was served at Sunday supper or someone brought you sheet trays of it as a new parent, this cheesy Italian classic is a universal sign of love. But it’s also a labor of love, that is, until I came up with this super quick way to make homemade lasagna!
What Makes This White Lasagna So Delicious?
- Unique Flavor – Rather than a traditional red sauce, I make mine with white Alfredo sauce, Italian sausage, and jarred Alfredo sauce, which makes a rich, creamy lasagna. It is SO GOOD!
- Minimal Ingredients, Maximum Flavor – Unlike traditional lasagna recipes, you won’t spend time boiling pasta noodles. Using ravioli gives you built-in cheesy layers, making the whole process faster and easier.
- Quick to Put Together – This recipe takes just 20 minutes to whip up, and most of that time is spent browning the sausage. I am all about spending less time in the kitchen and more time enjoying the meal with my family.
Ravioli Casserole Ingredients
- You’ll need frozen or store-bought cheese ravioli. I like to use smaller ones rather than jumbo ones to make them easier to slice. There is no need to boil them first.
- Ground Italian sausage adds so much flavor without adding spices to the dish. You can use either hot or mild sausage.
- This recipe uses three different cheeses: ricotta, parmesan, and mozzarella. If possible, always try to shred the parmesan and mozzarella yourself for better melting and more intense flavor.
- The sauce consists of an egg, jarred Alfredo sauce, chopped parsley, and black pepper (as desired).
Why Do I Need To Add An Egg To The Riccota?
Mixing in the egg helps everything bind together, and as it bakes, it firms up. This ensures your lasagna holds shape and gives you those perfect, sliceable layers!
Delicious Twists Baked Ravioli Casserole
- White Spinach Lasagna: You can easily fold baby spinach leaves into the ricotta before layering.
- White Chicken Lasagna: Swap the Italian sausage for rotisserie chicken. Just add 1 tablespoon of Italian herbs seasoning and ¼ teaspoon of salt.
- Add Onions and Red Peppers: Caramelized onions are great in this! Caramelize them and then layer in with the cheeses.
- Cottage Cheese: Swap the ricotta cheese with cottage cheese for more protein.
Step By Step Directions
- Step 1: Preheat oven and add ¼ cup of jarred alfredo sauce to the bottom of a 9×13 inch casserole dish. Cook the sausage in a large skillet and drain on a paper towel.
- Step 2: Place ½ of the ravioli in an even layer on top of the sauce at the bottom of the casserole dish. Spoon half the cooked sausage on the ravioli in the casserole dish. Make the ricotta mixture and spoon it over the sausage.
- Step 3: Spoon about ½ of the remaining Alfredo sauce over the ricotta.
- Step 4: Add the rest of the ravioli and a layer of the remaining sausage.
- Step 5: Top with the remaining alfredo sauce, sprinkle with shredded parmesan cheese and mozzarella, cover with foil, and bake for 15 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for 15-20 minutes until the top is golden brown.
- Step 6: Let the lasagna rest for 5 minutes, sprinkle it with fresh parsley and serve.
Make It A Freezer Meal
Creamy Alfredo Lasagna makes a great make-ahead freezer meal. Follow the directions as written, but after adding the ricotta layer, cover the baking dish tightly with heavy-duty foil, wrap the edges tightly, and transfer the unbaked casserole to the freezer. You can freeze it for up to 3 months.
To serve, thaw the casserole in the refrigerator overnight and remove it from the fridge for about 30 minutes before baking to remove the chill. Top it with the final layer of shredded cheese, and bake the casserole as directed. If it’s not baked thoroughly, you may need to increase the time to heat it through.
