October Means The Slow Cooker Is Back On The Counter

October is when my slow cooker really starts earning its spot on the counter.
Between busy weeknights, football weekends, Sunday suppers, and those first cool evenings when you want something warm for dinner, this is the time of year I reach for it again and again.
So I’m calling it Crocktober — a collection of cozy slow cooker recipes for fall that make dinner easier without making it boring. These are the recipes I turn to when I want supper cooking while I’m doing everything else, plus a few dips, soups, and sides that are made for sharing.
Let’s do this, Y’all

The Slow Cooker Comes Into Its Own In Fall
I use my slow cooker all year, but fall is when it really shines. A roast can cook low and slow while I’m out for the afternoon. Soup can be ready when everybody comes through the door. And on game day, I can keep a dip warm for hours without hovering over it.
That’s what I wanted this roundup to be: not every slow cooker recipe on A Southern Soul, but the ones that feel especially right for this season.

How I Build An Easy Fall Supper Around The Slow Cooker
One of the best things about slow cooker cooking is that the main dish can do most of the work. From there, I keep the rest of supper simple.
My basic formula is:
- One slow cooker main — roast, chicken, pulled pork, soup, or chili.
- One easy side — mashed potatoes, green beans, a simple salad, or roasted vegetables.
- Something for the table — cornbread, biscuits, rolls, or crusty bread.
- Something sweet if the mood strikes — pound cake, cobbler, or whatever I already have on hand.
It keeps dinner generous without turning it into a project.

Donya’s Tips & Things To Know
- Don’t overfill the slow cooker. Most recipes cook best when the insert is somewhere between half and three-quarters full.
- Brown when it adds something. Browning meat first can add extra flavor and color, but it isn’t necessary for every recipe. I follow the recipe rather than adding a step just because.
- Keep the lid on. Every time you lift it, heat escapes and cooking slows down.
- Know when to add dairy. Cream, milk, and some cheeses can separate if they cook too long, so many recipes add them near the end.
- Use LOW when you have the time. For roasts and tougher cuts of meat, a longer cook on LOW often gives you the most tender result.
- For dips, switch to WARM. Once a hot dip is ready, the WARM setting is perfect for keeping it ready to serve without continuing to cook it hard.

How To Set Up A Slow Cooker Supper Buffet
If I’m feeding a few extra people, I’d much rather set everything out and let everybody help themselves than spend the whole evening plating food. A slow cooker supper buffet makes that easy, and it keeps the meal feeling relaxed.
- Start with the main slow cooker. Put your roast, pulled pork, chicken, chili, or soup at the beginning of the line so everyone can build their plate from there.
- Add breads and starches next. Rolls, biscuits, cornbread, baked potatoes, rice, or mashed potatoes give the meal a little structure.
- Group toppings and extras together. Use small bowls for shredded cheese, green onions, sour cream, bacon, pickles, sauces, or anything else people might want to add.
- Put plates first and napkins and flatware last. It’s a small thing, but it keeps people from trying to juggle everything at once.
- Keep drinks somewhere else. A separate drink station keeps the food line from getting backed up.
- Give every slow cooker its own serving utensil. If you’re using more than one, a simple label makes things even easier.
- Use the WARM setting once the food is ready. That keeps everything at a good serving temperature without continuing to cook it hard.
My rule is simple: set it up so people can help themselves and you can actually sit down and enjoy them.
Slow Cooker Questions, Answered
Crocktober is simply a fun name for leaning into slow cooker season in October. It’s the time of year when soups, roasts, chili, dips, and cozy dinners start sounding especially good.
I recommend thawing meat before putting it in the slow cooker so it can heat through safely and cook more evenly.
It depends on the recipe. LOW is especially good for roasts and tougher cuts that benefit from a longer cook, while HIGH is useful when the recipe has been tested for a shorter cooking time.
Many can be partially prepped ahead. I often chop vegetables, measure seasonings, or prep ingredients the night before, then assemble and start the recipe the next day. Follow the individual recipe for any ingredients that should be added later.
Save This One For The Season
If fall is your cue to pull the slow cooker back out, save this Crocktober list. I’ll take an easy supper that cooks while I’m doing something else any day — especially this time of year.
