Some of the most simple things in life are the best, and roasted garlic slathered on crunchy bread is at the top of my list! Roasting garlic in the oven is ridiculously easy and can be used in many dishes. Here’s the thing, Y’all: When you roast garlic, it becomes rich, buttery, and sweet, thanks to the natural sugars caramelizing in the oven. This magical transformation gives roasted garlic a complex, comforting taste that’s hard to beat.
Why Make Roasted Garlic
- It adds SO much flavor to any dish, like mashed potatoes, pasta, and more.
- It’s super easy to do with just a little aluminum foil.
- Elevated flavor! You can make a few garlic heads at a time and use them throughout the week.
What You Need To Roast Garlic
- Garlic – Garlic comes in two main forms – softneck and hardneck. Softneck is common at the store, has smaller cloves, and a longer shelf life. Hardneck is more flavorful and has larger cloves but a shorter shelf life. Hardneck has a noticeable stem rising out of it so when I see it, I buy it because I love the strong garlic flavor!
- Oil – Olive oil or avocado oil is best for this.
- Salt and pepper—You can always add other seasonings, but I find salt and pepper perfect.
- Tin foil – This is what the garlic will be wrapped in.
How To Make Roasted Garlic
- Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Cut off the top of the raw garlic bulb, making sure to cut into all cloves.
- Place the whole head of garlic on a piece of tin foil. Drizzle olive oil over the garlic and sprinkle with salt and pepper.
- Wrap and twist the foil around the garlic bulb, making a foil packet, and place it directly on the oven rack.
- Roast for 45 to 50 minutes. Then let cool for 1 hour. Hold the whole bulb and squeeze out the garlic cloves to use it.
To Roast Individual Cloves
- Peel individual cloves of garlic and place them in foil. Drizzle with oil and spices, and then roast them at 400 degrees.
- Roast for 30-40 minutes.
