Why I Still Love A Date Night At Home

This week is a big one at our house. Rob and I have been married for over 30 years, and we celebrate our anniversary on February 10—then just a few days later, we’re celebrating our youngest son’s birthday on February 13. It’s one of those sweet, full weeks that reminds me how thankful I am for the ordinary days and the special ones.
And that’s exactly why I love an easy Valentine’s Day dinner for two at home. It doesn’t have to be a production to feel meaningful—it just needs a little intention. Below are three easy menu options—steakhouse-at-home, cozy chicken, and date-night pasta—plus a simple timeline so you can enjoy the night!

Donya’s Tips for Making It Special (Without Going Overboard)
- Pick one little “extra.” Candles, a pretty napkin, fresh flowers, or a favorite drink—just one detail changes the whole mood.
- Keep the menu calm. I like one easy make-ahead item (dessert or dressing) so I’m not rushing at the end.
- Go for cozy, not complicated. The best dinners at home feel warm and familiar—like something you actually want to eat.
- Add one thoughtful touch. A short note, a favorite song playlist, or setting the table early goes further than fancy food.
- Let it be imperfect. Intention matters more than perfection. You’re making a moment, not proving something.

Valentine’s Dinner Timeline (So You’re Not Stuck in the Kitchen)
Earlier in the day (or the day before, if you’re feeling extra responsible):
- Pick your menu and pull out what you’ll need (I swear this saves my sanity).
- Prep one thing ahead—dessert or dressing is my go-to.
- Set the table now if you can. Even a quick candle + napkin moment makes it feel special.
1 hour before dinner:
- Start the main (or get it ready to cook).
- Pop your side in the oven and let it do the heavy lifting.
- Put your appetizer together so it’s ready when you are.
20 minutes before:
- Toss the salad and pour drinks.
- Light the candles, put on your favorite tunes and take a breath… this is the part that matters.
Dinner time:
- Appetizer + drinks first (slow down and enjoy it).
- Salad, then the Main + sides.
After dinner:
- Dessert + coffee… and I fully support letting the kitchen wait until tomorrow.
