How To Use My Homemade Apple Spice Mix

Ingredients You’ll Need

Three glass bowls on a wooden board containing ground spices: nutmeg, cinnamon, and allspice, labeled accordingly. Two cinnamon sticks are placed beside the bowls, with a green checkered cloth in the background.

This homemade apple pie spice blend, without cardamon, combines warm cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice, creating a rich, aromatic flavor that surpasses any store-bought version. It’s cost-effective, customizable, and free from preservatives, giving you complete control over your favorite flavors!

Customize Your Spice Blend: Recipe Variations

  • Add Ground Ginger: Mix in a teaspoon of ground ginger. It adds a touch of heat to the blend, perfect for spiced cookies and cakes.
  • Include Cloves: If you love a deeper, warmer spice, add half a teaspoon of ground cloves. It complements the cinnamon beautifully.
  • Sweet Addition: For a sweeter twist, add powdered or brown sugar. It’s delicious for dusting over warm pancakes or muffins.

Step By Step Instructions

  • Combine the Ingredients: Add the ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and allspice to a mixing bowl.
  • Whisk Together: Using a whisk, gently combine all the spices until evenly distributed.
  • Store: Transfer the spice blend into a glass jar with a tight-fitting lid to keep it fresh.

Donya’s Success Tip

For the best flavor, use fresh spices. Ground spices can lose their potency over time, so if your cinnamon or nutmeg has been sitting in the pantry for a while (we’ve all got a jar of out-of-date spices in the back of our cabinet), consider picking up fresh ingredients.

A metal spoon rests inside an open glass jar filled with ground cinnamon on a wooden cutting board. Nearby are a cinnamon stick, a green checkered cloth, and part of an apple.

How Long Does This Apple Spice Mix Stay Good For?

When stored properly in an airtight container, it can stay fresh for up to 6 months. Keep it in a cool, dark place, like a pantry or spice cabinet, to maintain its potency.

Apple Pie Spice Recipe FAQ

Can I double the recipe?

What if I don’t have allspice on hand?

If you’re missing allspice, you can substitute it with a mix of equal parts ground cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves to mimic the flavor profile.

I have always added cloves and ginger to the cinnamon and allspice when I bake an apple pie or make applesauce. My husband always said my apple pies were better than his mother’s. (Although he never shared that with his mother, thank goodness! She only used cinnamon and nutmeg in her apple pie.) As I am not fond of nutmeg, I use mace instead.

    1. I love your spice blend — cloves, ginger, and mace sound like the perfect cozy twist! And that compliment from your husband? Priceless (and wisely kept quiet!). Thanks for sharing your sweet story.
