I love blue cheese. Without reservation, I’ve never met a funky cheese I didn’t like. Since my affection for blue cheese is so strong, it was just right and proper that I come up with my own blue cheese dressing recipe.
What To Serve With The Best Blue Cheese Dressing
This family-favorite, farmhouse-style dressing makes a classic salad with fresh lettuce with tomatoes. It’s so delicious drizzled over roasted pork tenderloin and baked potatoes. I love serving it as a dip for chicken wings, made in the air fryer, and of course, slathered on a bun for buffalo chicken sandwiches.
Ingredients For This Recipe
- Blue Cheese – Be sure to buy a block and crumble it yourself!
- Sour Cream – This adds tang and is one of the bases for the creaminess of the dressing. Some recipes use buttermilk, but I’ve found that sour cream lends a better texture. Plain Greek yogurt could be used in place of sour cream.
- Mayonnaise – This is the other base of the dressing. This helps to balance the tang of the sour cream.
- Half and Half – You can also use milk to help thin out the dressing a bit.
- Lemon Juice – A bit of citrus helps cut through the richness of the creams, mayo, and cheese. You can also use white wine vinegar.
- Garlic Powder – Garlic powder is a staple of blue cheese dressing.
- Worcestershire Sauce – This adds delicious umami flavor to the dressing. You notice This flavor if it’s not there, but you might not realize when it is.
- Fresh Chives– I like adding finely chopped chives for a fresh element.
- Salt and Black Pepper – Always taste and adjust salt and pepper as needed.
Donya’s Success Tips
- Use whatever kind of blue cheese you like. My favorites are Stilton and Roquefort. Gorgonzola is a great choice and not too expensive. Once you’ve selected the cheese, MAKE SURE to buy it in a block. Please don’t use blue cheese crumbles. They taste different, and you’ll be disappointed in the outcome.
- You can crumble the cheese by hand, with a grater, or carefully and slowly in a food processor.
- Add the half-and-half at the end of the recipe. It thins out the dressing, so just judge how thick you like it.
How To Make Blue Cheese Salad Dressing Or Dip
- Whisk together the mayonnaise, lemon juice, garlic powder, and Worcestershire sauce in a medium bowl. Stir in the blue cheese, chives, and pepper.
- Mix in 1 tablespoon at a time of half-and-half to thin the dressing to the desired consistency. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and additional pepper.
- Store in an airtight container or jar in the refrigerator for up to one week.
Commonly Asked Questions
No, ranch uses dill and other spices and omits Worcestershire sauce. Blue cheese dressing uses fewer spices, so the blue cheese really shines.
This dressing will last about a week in the fridge. I like to store it in a mason jar with a screw-top lid.
Sure! Just crumble extra clue cheese into the dressing mixture until you have the consistency you like.
Blue cheese is naturally low in carbs making it a keto-friendly food.

Carol
This may sound silly but can you use an 8oz block of blue cheese crumbled instead of measuring it in a cup? I do not know if the measurements would be the same or not.
Donya
Hey Carol.
Sure the 8 ounces will work. Go for it!
Have a great day.
