My Secret to Effortless Holiday Appetizers: Christmas Dips

The minute December rolls around, I’m ready for a table full of dips. Christmas at my house almost always starts with a spread of boards, platters, and little bowls — creamy, cheesy, bubbly, crunchy — and everyone circling the island with a plate in hand. Some years, those Christmas dips and spreads are the meal, and nobody complains one bit.
Over the years, I’ve tested these recipes at church parties, open houses, Christmas Eve gatherings, and casual “come by for a glass of wine” nights. My rule is simple: if it doesn’t get scraped clean by the end of the night, it doesn’t make the Christmas list.
The dips and spreads I’m sharing in this roundup are tried-and-true favorites from my kitchen, friends, and my readers, designed for real home cooks who want big flavor without a lot of fuss. This really is your complete Christmas dip guide!
Enjoy!

Christmas Dips and Spreads I Make Every Year – My Success Formula
When I’m planning a Christmas menu, I don’t overcomplicate the appetizers. After years of hosting, this has become my simple formula — my go-to tip for effortless, successful entertaining during the holidays. I always aim for three anchors:
- One hot, cheesy dip straight from the oven
- One cool, creamy dip or spread that balances everything out
- One sweet or “festive” dip that feels special and a little playful
From there, you can build out with more options depending on how many people you’re hosting. Think of dips as your “welcome committee” — they buy you time in the kitchen, keep folks happy, and instantly make the house feel cozy and generous.

How I Build a Christmas Dip Board
Think of your dip spread as a board or buffet, even if everything is in separate bowls and platters. Here’s how I map it out:
- Choose 3–5 dips: At least one hot, two cold, and one sweet if you’re hosting a crowd.
- Layer textures: Creamy dips, chunky salsas or relishes, and something melty or baked.
- Mix colors: Greens from herbs and veggies, deep reds from cranberries or peppers, golden browns from toasted nuts and crackers.
- Offer plenty of dippers.
- Crackers (a mix of plain and seedy)
- Sliced baguette or crostini
- Pita or naan wedges
- Tortilla chips or kettle chips
- Fresh veggies: carrots, cucumbers, bell peppers, snap peas
- A little fruit: apple slices, grapes, or pear slices with sweet dips
- I like to tuck fresh rosemary or thyme sprigs around the bowls, add a handful of cranberries or pomegranate arils here and there, and pull out my favorite little spreaders and cheese knives. It doesn’t have to be fussy — just thoughtful and inviting.
Food Safety for Holiday Dips
Here are my best tips for keeping food at just the right temperature for safety and deliciousness:
- Keep hot dips at 140°F or warmer using slow cookers, warming trays, or insulated servers.
- Don’t leave perishable dips out at room temperature for more than 2 hours (or 1 hour if your home is very warm).
- Refrigerate leftovers promptly in shallow containers so they cool down quickly.
- Reheat leftover hot dips to 165°F before serving again.
Dips and Spreads FAQs
For a small gathering (6–8 people), 3 dips is plenty: one hot, one cold, one sweet or “fun.” For a larger open house, I plan on 4–6 options, especially if dips are doing most of the heavy lifting for the meal.
You sure can! Most cold dips can be made 1–2 days ahead, and many baked dips can be assembled early, then baked right before guests arrive.
As a general rule, I don’t leave perishable dips out for more than 2 hours. After that, I like to refresh it with a chilled batch from the fridge.
I like to mix salty, crunchy, and fresh: crackers, crostini, tortilla or pita chips, pretzels, and plenty of sliced veggies. For sweet dips, I’ll add shortbread cookies(my fav!), vanilla wafers, or fruit like apples, pears, and grapes.
Well, yes and no. Cheese- and cream-based dips can sometimes separate when thawed, but many bake up nicely again if you reheat them gently. Fresh vegetable or herb dips usually aren’t great candidates for freezing. Just make smaller batches if you are thinking you might have leftovers.
