Donya’s Tips

  • I like to create my menu early, mark which dishes can be made a day or two before, and get a jump on anything that reheats beautifully. Casseroles, salads, and roasted vegetables are all perfect for prepping in advance — and honestly, many taste even better after the flavors have had time to blend.
  • Make sure you have reliable kitchen timers and instant-read thermometers on hand.

Ingredients I Keep On Hand For Holiday Cooking

Before the big day arrives, take a quick inventory of what’s already in your pantry and what you’ll need to pick up from the store. Having the basics on hand saves time when the kitchen starts humming.

Here are the ingredients I like to keep ready for Thanksgiving week:

  • Chicken or vegetable stock
  • Olive oil
  • Kosher salt and black pepper
  • A mix of herbs and seasonings
  • Fresh garlic
  • Carrots, potatoes, corn, green beans, and sweet potatoes
  • Brussels sprouts
  • Butter, milk, and half-and-half
  • Chocolate chips (for sweet little treats or quick cookies!)
  • Pecans

These staples are the foundation for nearly every classic Southern side dish — from casseroles and roasted vegetables to creamy mashed potatoes and decadent desserts.
