Here’s How I Keep Thanksgiving Calm, Cozy, and Delicious

Every Thanksgiving, my kitchen turns into a happy kind of chaos—pots simmering, family popping in and out, and someone always sneaking a taste. And I love every bit of it!
Over the years, I’ve learned that having a few appetizers ready makes the day so much smoother. Guests can nibble while I finish up the turkey and sides, and it keeps everyone gathered in the kitchen chatting instead of asking, “When do we eat?” I love serving a mix of hot dips, easy finger foods, and something a little unexpected—like a seasonal cheese board or a sweet-and-savory nut mix. These little bites set the tone for a relaxed, happy holiday and make your home feel instantly welcoming.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Donya’s Tips for Stress-Free Thanksgiving Appetizers
- Keep it simple.
Choose recipes that don’t need a lot of last-minute attention. Think make-ahead dips, or Crock Pot favorites that stay warm while you focus on the turkey. - Mix hot and cold options.
A balance of room-temperature bites (like cheese balls or snack mixes) and warm dishes (like sausage balls or baked dips) keeps things easy and enjoyable. - Prep ahead whenever you can.
I like to chop veggies, measure ingredients, and make sauces or dressings the day before. It saves so much time on Thanksgiving morning and helps me enjoy the day instead of rushing. - Use what you already have.
There’s no need for fancy serveware. Arrange your appetizers on cutting boards, baking sheets, or favorite platters—it’s all about presentation and charm, not perfection. - Don’t forget the drinks.
Set up a small drink station or pitcher cocktail so guests can help themselves. It keeps the energy light and festive while freeing you up for last-minute kitchen tasks. - Have a plan for reheating.
If you’re serving warm dishes, set your oven to low or use the slow cooker’s warm setting to keep everything at the perfect temperature until serving time.

How Much Food Should I Make?
The amount of food you prepare will depend entirely on how many people you’re hosting. These are the general guidelines I use when cooking for a crowd. That being said, if you know that everyone wants a second serving of an appetizer, you can adjust the portions.
Starters
- I recommend making 2 servings per person.
Dips
- You’ll want to make about 3 ounces of dip per person.
Small Bites
- 3-5 bite-sized portions per person is generally enough.
Drinks
- I recommend making two drink servings per person, about 10-12 ounces.
